Hong Kong Watch Trustee presented our new report findings to Canadian Parliament and recommended launching Parliamentary Group on Hong Kong

Aileen Calverley, one of Hong Kong Watch's trustees, visited the Canadian Parliament in February to present our new report "Why Hong Kong Matters" to Canadian MPs and Senators and to put forward a proposal to form a new Parliamentary Group on Hong Kong. The proposal was accepted and Kenny Chiu MP and Senator Leo Housakos have confirmed to be the Co-Chairs of this new Group. Kenny Chiu MP suggested launching the new Group on the same day as our new report launch event on 26 May which will be hosted by the Shadow Minister for Canada-China Relations Garnett Genuis MP, an International Patron of Hong Kong Watch. Kenny Chiu MP will invite our other International Patron David Kilgour JD, the former Secretary of State for Asia Pacific to speak at the event.

During the trip, Aileen Calverley presented the report to the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Erin O’Toole MP, Shadow Minister for National Defence James Bezan MP, Conservative Caucus Chair Tom Kmiec MP, Shadow Minister for Finance Pat Kelly MP and Michael Chong MP, as well as Senator Jim Munson, Senator Leo Housakos and Senator Thanh Hai Ngo. All these Parliamentarians have agreed to join the Parliamentary group on Hong Kong.

The report was also presented to the Global Affairs Canada (Canada Foreign Ministry) in which the China team expressed great interest in the report, especially the economic data that was used to support our findings.
