Hill Times: Parliamentarians call for audit of personal, financial connections Hong Kong officials may have in Canada

On 2 July 2021, Sam Goodman, Senior Policy Advisor of Hong Kong Watch was quoted in the Hill Times on parliamentarians calling for holding Hong Kong officials to account for their role in the ongoing crackdown on the city’s pro-democracy movement and numerous human rights violations.

The report says prior to the anniversary of the first anniversary of the imposition of the National Security Law in Hong Kong, a group of 20 Parliamentarians wrote to Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau asking the government to audit the financial and personal connections that Hong Kong officials have in Canada.

Sam Goodman said:

“As we mark the one-year anniversary of Beijing imposing the draconian national security law on Hong Kong, it is an important reminder of the need for Canada and other like-minded partners to hold Hong Kong officials to account for their role in the ongoing crackdown on the city’s pro-democracy movement and numerous human rights violations.”

“We fully support calls by this cross-party group of Parliamentarians for the Canadian government to undertake an audit of the assets and connections Hong Kong officials and their families have in Canada. This is an important step in proving the effectiveness of using targeted Magnitsky sanctions against Hong Kong officials.”
